Kathleen Hayes earned a BA in printmaking from Sonoma State University and an MFA in visual art from the George Washington University.

Though the themes in her work have always revolved around nature, it was in graduate school that Ms. Hayes first became interested in the field of environmental aesthetics, and in particular the work of philospher Arnold Berleant. Berleant’s approach to environmental aesthetics emphasises the central role of the person as an active participant and the perceptual center in environmental experience.

Influenced by these ideas, Ms. Hayes began to create work from her experiential perception of nature. Of particular impact were the deceptively homogenous landscapes of fields and grasses, of which her current work is an outgrowth. Her fields pieces are relief paintings through which Ms. Hayes explores her experiences of particular aspects of nature.

Ms. Hayes is a recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in 2003. Recent exhibitions have included a solo show at Loyola College Julio Art Gallery in Baltimore in 2006 and the 2004 Fiber Art Bienial at Snyderman Gallery in Philidelphia.

Ms. Hayes lives and maintains a studio in Baltimore, Maryland.
